WASPY Wednesday

I've made a decision, June is my favorite Month of the whole year. I'm not sure why.

OK I need major help. Greye is going to sleep away camp for the first time this summer. No cell phones, no computers and no Mother's welcome.  The only way my son can communicate with us is if he writes us letters. This was the way it was when I went to camp. In fact we had to write a letter to our parents every Sunday if we wanted dinner, it was mandatory.

I, however, can email him (they are printed and delivered to the campers daily) and write him as much as I want. Where I need your help is I am also allowed to send him care packages but........NO food (bugs, rodents etc). Greye loves to surf so I thought I'd send him some magazines. Gum isn't food so I thought I'd also include that but isn't that the most pathetic, boring care package ever? What would you send?

Thanks for your ideas!

  1. That's a tough one...I'd send comic books, magazines, gum, maybe a card game or a pack of cards, some travel sized games, extra sunscreen, extra bug repellent, self addressed stamped envelopes(so he has no excuse not to write)Hope these are some good ideas.

  2. Definitely comic books. Mad Libs are still kind of fun. Maybe some magic tricks he could learn (because they have talent shows). And if you send cards, send poker chips. And they really enjoy water balloons because what is camp without pranks?!

  3. Oh I wish I had children, I have no idea, what a toughie.
Oh you will be pining, everyone around you must buffer you up! I went to camp in America and loved it, what an experience, we don't have anything like that here.

  4. I agree with the ideas in the other comments. Giving him some things he can give away / trade would also be good. Little games that are in the front section at target maybe? Slinkee or bouncy balls?

  5. This is so tough when you are making a care package for a boy! Girls...easy peasy, lemon squeezy! I know one thing we did for certain was play a ton of Uno and Yatzee! Don't forget to tuck a family photo in so he can sneak a peep when he gets home~sick!!

  6. Since I've had a son at camp every year since 1998, and my youngest (15) is heading to his last summer as a camper on Monday, I have lots of ideas! There are a couple websites that send pre made "boy" camp packages, and even though its just a bunch of junk, the little ones love that stuff, especially if they see another boy get that package! I've sent sports magazines, trading cards, sports column from newspaper, sunglasses & croakies, special flashlight, books, hammock I originally said NO to buying, a sports themed pillow. Amazon is an easy source and hardly any work for mom! I love to send Funny extra large cards, especially music cards that embarrass them when they open them:) I also start sending cards a few days before camp so they get mail the first or second day. When they were younger I sent a package that had something for every camper in the cabin. Another idea is calling cards with their name and email address to pass out to their new friends. Good luck! My boys loved camp so much they worked as counselors every summer through college!

  7. I know when I was a camper my mom sent me silly bandz, stickers, a disposable camera, a baseball hat, and like a water bottle! Once she even sent me a book! Best of luck with the package. :)

  8. My friend you know I'm loving that he can only communicate by writing a letter! The Art of letter writing may continue on... I'm certain you will treasure those handwritten letters for years to come...Sounds like you are on the right track with the care package ...something to read on a subject that he likes will encourage him to read. Happy summer...xo HHL

  9. Does he like Legos or Mad libs books magazines? Five below probably has fun things to send, too. Though not exciting suntan lotion and Chapstick. My Brady is going to boy scout camp for a week this July. He can't wait. I'm going to miss him! I bet you will miss your son, too.

  11. Surf magazines, envelopes so that he mails you letters, maybe throw in a dollar or 2 for a vending machine, some fresh white tshirts, socks and or boxers

  12. I think everyone has great ideas! And we also had the rule no food...but my grandma would always send me a bag of hershey kisses to share with my bunk (and they were always gone within an hour so no chance of anything else getting them)

  13. Awww! Way to ruin camp...not letting mummy send snacks!!

My son would want Thomas the Train sets and cozy socks....not that that's any help!

  14. All great suggestions & many of them I did. I also sent containers of wet wipes & homemade chocolate chip cookies for the whole cabin. I can't believe they won't let you send food! I also sent them pre-stamped postcards already addressed to us (and some blank ones) so they had no excuse for not writing...
