Preppy Guest Blog!

Happy Wednesday!

I want to introduce you to my twin Carrie at Tartan and Toile! She is adorable and I seriously think we were separated at birth. To read her blog click here-preppy
Whenever I meet a new preppy blog buddy I just have to get to the bottom of it!
So I asked:

When did you first realize you were a preppy?

"Mummy always dressed me in preppy clothes. She is very preppy herself and always looks fabulous. She NEVER goes out the door without make-up and a fabulous outfit. I think the realization occurred in 5th grade when I got my first pair of penny loafers. I LOVED them - loved wearing them with polo shirts and anything in my beloved tartan. I remember going to the fabric store with mom to buy several different tartan ribbons to tie in my pony tail. I also had a small Bermuda bag with a madras cover that I just adored. No one else in my school dressed that way, so I was pretty unique."

What do you like most about the prep lifestyle?
"I love the clothes – but really the whole package. I’m very traditional in all things – clothing, music, decorating. I’m a total Anglophile and love the English country look. Mummy grew up in horse country – Lexington KY – and that has always had a big influence on our taste in clothing and decorating. I like things traditional, classic and timeless. I’m certainly never accused of being trendy – but often told I’m “an old soul” which is just fine with me. I even had someone tell me I was “too conservative” (for once not referring to my politics) – I prefer to call it having standards."

Is it clothes or more to you, being a prep?

"Being preppy is a state of mind. It’s not just about your clothes, but how you live. It’s also very much for me about being true to yourself. I dress this way and live this way because it’s who I am. I saw a quote on Queen Bee Swain the other day that I love: “You were born an original. Don’t die a copy.” Love that! "

Some background-any funny preppy memories?

"The first one that comes to mind was this past October. I was wearing riding boots, a red quilted vest, a horsey scarf and slim tan pants the day before Halloween and someone thought it was a Halloween costume…I’m still laughing about it. Another would be the Gucci watch I got for my high school graduation present. It’s a very simple gold one and I still wear it all the time. I love it! "

What do you think of mean girls/social climbers and do you have any thoughts on my novel that you would like to share?

"It’s funny, but the “mean girls” I’ve always encountered were not at all the ones in “Social Climbers.” Instead I’ve always been stuck with the ones who think it’s bizarre to shop at Talbots, Ann Taylor, Lilly, etc…the ones who love to criticize and talk behind your back and think you’re a snob because you dress a certain way or like classical music and antiques. Girls who think nothing of blowing $50 at the bar but then think you are weird for spending that much for a blouse on sale at Nordies. I even had a girl in 8th grade –a girl I had NEVER met before – confront me and try to start a fight because “I dressed too nice.” Nothing happened, but I was scared the rest of my 8th grade year. My experiences would be a reversal of the mean girls in “Social Climbers” – but the stress and hurt they create is the same. People can be so very nasty to each other and it’s really a shame. "

Isn't she so cute! I hope everyone has a lovely day.

  6. I loved reading this! But how on earth can people mistake that outfit for a Halloween costume...? *shudders*

  7. OMG, did we grow up in the same town? Her remembrance of "mean girls" is exactly what I've been finding my whole life. Because one dresses a certain way, they are considered a snob. I always try to go out of my way and be overly friendly to try to compensate somehow.

Carrie, wonderful interview and nice to meet you!

  14. Adorable. I love that her Mummy is from Lexington, where I lived for several years (Ky born and raised). I love the word "Nordies" and think it's hilarious that someone thought she was wearing a Halloween costume! (reminds me of when I wore Lilly pink/orange pants to the livestock show in a tiny, tiny town in Ky, everyone thought I was wearing PJ pants!) I just found her blog and love her!! See a lot of me there.
